Vojko Obersnel, Mayor of Rijeka

 

Mr. Vojko Obersnel has been the Mayor of Rijeka since 2000, elected for his 5th term of office in 2013. Graduate of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Science, he completed Master's Program in biogenetics at the Faculty of Medicine of the same University. For 15 years, Mayor Obersnel worked at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka, where he lectured and did research work in genetics and ecology for public health institutions of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and Istria County.

Mr. Obersnel committed himself to politics in 1997, when he was appointed Head of the Department for Health and Social Welfare in the Rijeka City Government. After consecutive electoral victories, he was invited to join Social Democratic Party presidency in 2008.

For a decade, from 2003 to 2013, Mayor Obersnel presided over of the Association of the Cities and Communes of the Republic of Croatia; where today he is a member of presidency.

In 2003, President of Italy awarded Mayor Obersnel the Solidarity Star Order and Commendatore honor title.
